Miyabi Tank Cleaning Chemicals (MiTAC™)

Tank Cleaning is required primarily for the following applications:

a)   To avoid contamination of cargo when there is a change

b)   For inspection of structure whether it is mandatory or
      statutory under its local purview such as Local
      Environmental, Safety or Labour laws or international
      regulation such as IMO and MARPOL rules for tanker

c)   To enable discharging of clean water ballast.

The method to achieve tank cleaning is dependent on the equipment, the time allocated and the cleaning chemicals available.

The selection of proper tank cleaning chemicals and the necessary mechanical aid or equipment, and washing time are important factors in ensuring the effectiveness of the tank cleaning program.


The Mitac Washing Process

The purpose of the wash processes it to dislodge the unwanted materials (term smudge) from the surface it is attached to (ie. Tank walls and bottom) into a dispersed liquid phase.

The smudge on the surface is kept in place by forces of an electrical charge nature. To loosen a smudge particle, it has to be pulled away from the surface and then kept in suspension or in disperse form to prevent it from depositing again at the surface.

MiTACTM is one such product that is able to do with its components called tensides. This effect is the ability of the tensides in MiTACTM to go in between the smudge particles and the surface, engulfing the entire smudge thereby preventing it from re-depositing.

Temperature is an important factor affecting the effectiveness of the tank cleaning process. This is particularly in the case of heavy oils and fats where the viscosity is high. An increase in temperature will enhance the penetration of MiTACTM to dislodge and remove the heavy oils and fats from the surface.
Conversely, temperature is not so important for oils that is ‘light’ (low in viscosity) in nature as the oil is ‘light’ enough for MiTACTM to penetrate in between the surface and the smudge.

Another important process is mechanical agitation. It is evident that mechanical agitation will ease the tensides in dislodging the smudge from the surface. A small difference in the speed of the MiTACTM solution from the mechanical agitation may double the washing efficiency many times over.
